The great expansion of immigration to the United States in recent decades went counter to the consistent preference of the public. This was all the more true when it was illegal immigration. More than any of the other 2016 Republican presidential candidates, Donald Trump seized the immigration issue and his strong restrictionist positions resonated well with primary voters. When President Trump assumed office in January 2017 one of the biggest questions the country faced was the extent to which he would attempt to turn his immigration campaign promises into policy, as well as the extent to which he might succeed.
In his 2018 State of the Union address President Trump identified four key “pillars” for the changes he sought in immigration policy. Each of his concerns is incorporated and addressed within the topics that organize this book. They are: 1) protecting the Dreamers; 2) enhancing border security (building the wall); 3) resolving the status of adult illegal residents; and 4) altering legal immigration policy. Each of these topics is analyzed within its broader context, especially the last two issues. To do so, The 2018 Immigration Debate: Trump Faces Public Opinion presents the results for a wide variety of public opinion questions for the broadest time span possible, in some cases stretching across decades. Partisan differences are also portrayed when relevant, often showing sharp differences between Democrats and Trump voters that highlight the difficulties that continue to face compromise—and viable solutions--in this area.
