Kerry Langan’s latest collection will resonate for those born at the tail end of the baby boom generation and the early years of Generation X. All will be able to relate, however, to the questions raised in this book: What makes us worthy? What do we strive for and what do we think we deserve? Langan deftly creates characters who attempt to find their places in the world: children and adults try to stand out, make the grade, and fear being left behind, made invisible, whether in pre-school or a college classroom, a summer camp or a fledgling cult, a family system. They learn that success can shift in shape, however, and sometimes losing is not the worst option—indeed can result in new insights, inviting new paths.

LOOK INSIDE
"As the title of this big-hearted collection of stories and novellas might suggest, Kerry Langan’s Worthy explores our universal desire to be looked upon as worthy by our peers, parents, teachers, and partners. But what happens when our need for acceptance is so great that it compels us to venture into uncomfortable and dangerous terrain? The lessons here are never easy, but there are rewards awaiting these intrepid souls—as there are rewards awaiting the readers of this tender and moving collection."--Jon DiSavino, host and producer of Short Story Today podcast
"Kerry Langan’s beautifully crafted and compelling narratives of resilience and self-discovery, betrayal and reclamation will stay with the reader long after each story ends. I couldn’t put this book down!"--Michele Markarian, author of The Unborn Children of America and Other Family Procedures
"On the surface, Kerry Langan’s masterful new short story collection often deals with seemingly ordinary life events while actually and unobtrusively plumbing confounding elements, vagaries, and unsettling aspects of those experiences. Whether dealing with subject matter that is nostalgic or uneasy, close to home or distant, full of loss or plentitudes, Langan has woven a collection of tales that is memorable, moving, and touches one’s very sensibility and soul."--William Cass, author of Love & Other Stories and Uncommon & Other Stories
"With clarity, compassion, and an enviable command of craft and language, Langan charts the psychic journeys of her fascinating young and adult characters—and shows readers, as she did in her previous short fiction collections, that she’s a master of the form."--Murali Kamma, author Not Native, Short Stories of Immigrant Life in an In-Between World
