This six week writing workshop explores
how the distinctive qualities of different genres of writing - poetry,
memoir, and short story - can help us claim and integrate key dimensions
of the experience of illness, the shifting senses of our body, our self,
and our community, all of which can be challenged, often and
repeatedly. Using the anthology Illness & Grace: Terror &
Transformation, we will read the writing of contemporary writers making
sense of their own experiences of illness, and explore how our own
writing can help us shape and share our own experiences. This course is
for anyone who is interested in using the reflective and
transformational qualities of writing to help them explore life-changing
events and discover new and gracious stories to inform their lives.

This
Writing for Insight group course
is designed for nurses, therapists, social workers and other healthcare
professonals who are interested in using writing for reflection and transformation.
It will be of interest to aspiring writers and also to people who just want to
feel more at rest in their chosen profession, whether they are just beginning
and trying to reconcile what they learned in class with what they see in
practice, struggling with burnout, or on the way to a new career but would like
to unload some baggage before they do. Through essay, memoir, fiction and
poetry, participants are invited to explore the sometimes messy, funny,
infuriating, frustrating, discouraging, invigorating, and gracious
intersections between their personal lives, their professional practice, and
the systems which shape their practice. It is designed to help them find a
personal - and a public - voice that speaks from the wholeness of their own
experience.
